E-bike injuries have been rising across California, and one question that tends to follow is, what compensation can you actually recover after the crash? The answer depends on what you can tie back to the accident and support with evidence. Let’s break it down.

Medical expenses

Medical expenses form the backbone of most claims because they show both the existence and the extent of your injury. Keep records for everything, including ambulance rides, ER visits, imaging such as X-rays or CT scans, follow-ups, therapy and prescriptions. If your doctor recommends future care, include those costs, especially when recovery takes longer than expected.

Lost income and earning capacity

Lost income shows how the accident affected your ability to work. Use pay stubs, schedules or employer notes to show what you already lost, while reduced hours, lighter duties or a change in role show what you continue to lose if you cannot return to work the same way as before.

Pain and suffering

Pain and suffering becomes easier to support when you keep it specific. Instead of general statements, note how your routine changed, such as trouble sleeping, limited movement or missed activities. Showing those day-to-day effects helps explain the real impact of the injury.

Property damage and out-of-pocket costs

Property damage and out-of-pocket costs include what you had to fix, replace or pay for because of the crash. E-bike repairs alone can be expensive, and smaller costs like transportation or medical supplies can add up. Keep receipts to make sure nothing gets left out.

Make sure your claim reflects the full impact

A complete claim comes from putting everything together in one clear picture. Take the time to gather what shows how the accident affected you, both financially and personally, and make sure nothing gets left out. If it starts to feel unclear or overwhelming, you do not have to handle it alone. A bike accident attorney can help you sort through what matters and what to do next.

You deserve to know where the highest risks exist so you can travel with caution.

Official 2023 and 2024 data from the SANDAG Traffic Safety Dashboard identifies pedestrian right-of-way violations and pedestrian violations as the leading causes of injuries. If you find yourself on these specific stretches, your vigilance is the best tool for staying safe.

High risk highways and intersections

While many areas see heavy traffic, certain corridors consistently report high accident volumes. City traffic engineers recently identified several locations as the most dangerous for motorists based on 2024 crash records. The following 10 locations are among the highest risk zones in the county:

Interstate 5 near downtown

Interstate 15 near Miramar

Interstate 805 through Chula Vista

University Avenue

El Cajon Boulevard

15th Street at F Street

8th Avenue at Broadway

Bayard Street at Grand Avenue

8th Avenue at University Avenue

Kettner Boulevard at Sassafras Street

Data from regional safety reports indicates that San Diego recorded 984 collisions involving pedestrians in 2023. These incidents often occur in busy neighborhoods where there are many cars. While highways like Interstate 5 see a lot of traffic, specific street corners often present the greatest risk to people walking or biking.

Unique hazards for vulnerable road users

You face increased risks if you travel by e-bike or bicycle. Narrow lanes on University Avenue and high speeds on Friars Road make these areas particularly dangerous for those on two wheels. Many drivers do not expect the speed of an e-bike, which can lead to side-impact crashes at intersections.

A city report released on Jan. 22, 2026, lists specific intersections downtown and in Pacific Beach as high-priority areas for safety improvements. These locations were selected because they saw five or more injury or fatal crashes in a single year. If you must navigate these areas, you should use bright gear and stay alert for drivers who are not paying attention.

Protect your legal rights

The moments following a crash are often confusing. You must focus on getting better while also protecting your legal rights. Figuring out who is at fault in a crash with multiple cars or bikes requires a close look at the scene and traffic patterns.

Law enforcement records show that drivers failing to yield to people walking is a major cause of local injuries. If you are hurt in a crash, taking photos and notes of the scene is a vital first step for your recovery. Consider speaking with a local attorney to learn how these laws apply to your case.

In an effort to help minimize the risks that pedestrians, cyclists, fellow motorists and other travelers face on roads in and around San Diego in the coming year, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) – in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) a grant to support its ongoing traffic safety education and enforcement programs.

The grant will specifically support ongoing education and enforcement efforts through September 2026, which will significantly support programming that has already proven to be effective.

How the grant will help to keep San Diego roads safer

When receiving the grant, SDPD Sgt. Gregory Minter observed that, "Through a combination of education and enforcement efforts, our goal is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes and make our roads safer for everyone." The new OTS grant aims to support those efforts so that they can do the kinds of good in 2026 that they’ve done in 2025.

Specifically, the grant will support both drunk driving patrols and DUI checkpoints to minimize travelers’ risk of being struck by an impaired driver. It will also support operations targeted at enforcing California’s distracted driving rules, including its hands-free cell phone law. It will also support community safety education specifically related to cycling and pedestrian concerns.

More broadly, enforcement operations will also focus on the top causes of motor vehicle collisions in California, including speeding. These operations will also target dangerous behavior that specifically places the health and safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorized travelers at the greatest risk of harm.

Additionally, the OTS grant is going to support outreach and collaboration with neighboring law enforcement agencies and either training or recertification for officers in certain safety protocols, including recognizing impairment, performing impairment-related testing during traffic stops and impairment-related stop enforcement protocols.

While no city can be completely insulated from the risk of car collisions, each city can take steps to help minimize that risk. The new OTS grant is going to help San Diego do just that in 2026.

One moment you are out for a walk or visiting a friend, the next, you are bleeding and shaken. You have just been attacked by a dog off its leash, and you feel the pain starting to creep in. When the shock fades, the question remains: who is responsible? In California, the answer is straightforward. The state’s strict liability law means dog owners are usually responsible for bite injuries, even if their furry friend never acted aggressively before.

How does the strict liability law work?

Under California Civil Code §3342, a dog owner is liable if their dog bites someone in a public place or while the victim is on the owner’s private property. If you are the victim, you do not have to prove that the owner knew the dog was dangerous, the bite alone can make the owner legally responsible.

This law exists to make recovery easier for victims. There is no need to talk about the dog’s history, the circumstances surrounding the injury or whether the animal was stressed or sick. The law focuses on the injuries and their impact.

When do the rules apply?

California’s strict liability law generally covers anyone bitten by a dog. Here are some exceptions:

The dog was on the owner’s property and the victim was the one trespassing at the time of the incident.

The dog was performing police or military work.

The victim provoked the dog.

You may still have a claim despite these exceptions, but you will need a lawyer who can prove the owner’s negligence rather than relying solely on strict liability.

How can legal counsel help?

A personal injury attorney can help you collect medical evidence, assess your damages and deal with insurers so you can focus on recovery. Compensation may include medical expenses, lost income and in some cases, psychological trauma, especially among children.

Protect your rights after a dog bite

California law can protect victims like you, but you need to act quickly. The deadline for filing a claim is two years from the date of the injury. Make sure you secure evidence such as photos, medical records and witness statements to strengthen your case. Finally, speak with a personal injury lawyer who can help you recover the compensation you deserve.
